Dearest Friends & Family

The time we have on this earth is so short considering how much we try to pack into it. As we are so occupied with our daily work schedule we often neglect our friends and family. We dont make that phone call, post a letter or send an email at the time the thought to do so is formed, until it slips away and is forgotten. Then we receive the news that one of our friends or relatives has passed on and we berat ourselves for not keeping in touch more often.

I am as guilty as the next person of neglecting my friends and family. Being constantly on the telphone all day long at work makes me shy away from it when I get home. I dont remember to check the messages on the answer machine and days go by.

This weekend was no exception, I was busy out and about doing stuff. It was not until Monday night that I checked my messages. I learnt that a very dear friend had been involved in a road accident the previous week and had passed away on Saturday.

She was a jolly, sweet and loving Irish lady. We met through work and became firm friends keeping up contact even when I left the job and moved on. Two years ago we had gone to Paris by coach for the weekend. Climbing up all those stairs in Montmarte had took us ages. When we arrived at the church we had to sit and rest for a while. Entering the church we found a confession box which was ancient. She jumped into one side while I took the other as we giggled our way through 'Forgive me Mother for I have sinned' although we were fairly quiet the passing security guard had seen and heard us. Ordering us out of the box...and then out of the church too with a stern look on his face, he must have wondered about the two middle-aged biddies who dared to behave so.

This year she had fancied going to Rome in August but I put her off as I thought it would be too hot. We decided to leave it for a while and find another weekend package to take when the weather cooled down.

From what I have been told by friends, she had left work for lunch, riding her electric bike without a crash helmet. Going fairly fast she had crashed into a a taxi drivers door, opened by the cabbie without looking to see if there was anyone coming. The impact had hurled her from her bike onto her head where she suffered severe head injuries. She was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington unconcious with brain haemorrhage. She slipped into a coma, her ventilator was turned off on Saturday.

I shall always remember her with a smile, may the soul that left us for no reason rest in peace.
