Sunday we set off early for a trip to Cambridge. We had arranged to take our guest G( from Minnesota, USA) for a sightseeing tour. Arriving in the beautiful university town we bought tickets for a punt tour down the river.
The day was lovely and sunny, the punt held 12, us 4 and 5 from Ireland, 2 from USA (tourists). Our punter was Nikko, young chap doing his gap year. He gave us all the spiel about the various colleges which are near the banks of the river Cam. Henry VIII etc etc. Took lots of pictures, the ride took us about 40 mins and cost £10 each, well worth it.
Next we went for a walk through the town, stopped at a fudge shop, watched them making fudge. They have different flavours and we were able to taste a couple. I bought some chocolate mint, this is sold by weight. I did not think that the palm sized piece I had purchased would weigh so much and ended up paying £5 for it.
Leaving the shop we went into a college nearby to take a few more snaps, then spent some time walking round the town finally ending up on the river banks for some tea.
Ely Cathedral was not far from Cambridge, we decided to drive there next. The cathedral in very impressive.
Ely Cathedral began as a monastery in AD 673 founded by St Etheldreda.
The Danes destroyed it and Abbot Simeon rebuilt it in 1081.
The central tower fell in 1322.
Alan of Walsingham rebuilt it in the design of the Octagon.
There are 250,000 visitor every year, the Cathedral is 537ft (165m) long.
Finally we decided that as it was not more the 30 miles away, we would drive to Kings Lynn, Norfolk to see my two grandsons A & N. A rare event!
We spend an while there with them before driving all the way back to London, reaching home at 10.00pm. A lovely day.
